Mr. Kumar is a member of the Lok Sabha, from Bangalore South
constituency of Karnataka. He belongs to the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP), and is, currently, the Party's National General
Secretary. He was also the President of the BJP in Karnataka.
Mr. Kumar has also been a member of the eleventh, twelfth
and the thirteenth Lok Sabha, respectively. During his various
stints in the Lok Sabha, he held important positions as a
Union Minister. He was the Union Cabinet Minister for Urban
Development and Poverty Alleviation with additional charge
of Ministry of Rural Development; Union Cabinet Minister for
Tourism & Culture; Union Cabinet Minister for Culture,
Youth Affairs and Sports; and Union Cabinet Minister for Civil
Aviation with additional charge of Ministry of Tourism.
Presently, Mr. Kumar is the Chairman of the Parliamentary
Standing Committee on Coal and Steel. Earlier, he has served
as a member of several important committees, such as, Standing
Committee, Ministry of Railways and Consultative Committee,
Ministry of Industry. He was also a member of the Governing
Council of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
Mr. Kumar is also actively involved in many social and cultural
activities. He is the Chief Patron of Adamya Chetna, a Trust
which has successfully undertaken many projects, such as,
"Annapoorna", a project in partnership with the
Central and State Governments reaching Mid-Day meals to 30,0000
children of 150 schools in and around Bangalore, "Adoption
of Government Schools"-striving for overall development
of Government of Kannada schools, including activities of
providing drinking water facility, building renovation, health
check-ups etc. "Vocational Training Programme" -
training for underprivileged, especially girls and women in
the area of computer and training since 1998.
Mr. Kumar has published several articles on issues of national
importance in national dailies and authored many booklets
on political and educational issues.
Mr. Kumar is widely traveled and was a part of three-member
Indian Parliamentary Delegation to UNESCO Conference on Communication,
Information, Education and Culture held in Paris.
