Mr. Arjun Kumar Sengupta represents the state of West Bengal
in the Rajya Sabha. He is an independent member of the Upper
House. He sits on the important Parliamentary Committee on
External Affairs.
In his public life, Mr. Sengupta has occupied various positions
of extreme importance. Between 1993 and 1998, he was the Member
Secretary (in the rank of Minister of State) of the Planning
Commission, Government of India. Between 1990 and 1993, he
served as the Ambassador of India to the European Union in
Brussels. Between 1985 and 1990, he wsa the Executive Director
and Special Advisor to the Managing Director, International
Monetary Fund in Washington, DC; and between 1981 and 1984,
he served as the Special Secretary to the then Prime Minister
of India.
An economist and diplomat by profession, Mr. Sengupta did
his B.A., M.A., Ph.D. (Economics) from Presidency College,
Kolkata and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA,
respectively.
Mr. Sengupta has written various articles in journals and
leading newspapers. He has the famous Reforms, Equity and
the IMF to his credit. For sometime, he had been teaching
and lecturing on Human Rights and Economic Development at
Harvard University, Essex University, and Oslo University.
A widely travelled person, Mr. Sengupta was also an Independent
Expert for the Human Rights Commission, Geneva on (a) The
Right to Development (1999-2004) and (b) Human Rights and
Extreme Poverty (2004-2006)
