Dr. Jalan was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in August 2003. Presently, he is a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy. Between 1997 and 2003, he was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He has served as Member-Secretary of the Planning Commission of India, Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, and the Finance Secretary, Banking Secretary, and Chief Economic Advisor in the Government of India. Dr. Jalan has also occupied the significant post of the Executive Director for India in the World Bank.

He completed his education from Presidency College, Kolkata, University of Bombay, and Cambridge University and Oxford University in the United Kingdom. In his capacity as an economist, Dr. Jalan has chaired several distinguished economic and academic research institutions in India, namely, the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research in Mumbai, the National Council of Applied Economic Research in New Delhi, and the Institute of Economic Growth in New Delhi.

Dr. Jalan has written a number of books on various economic and related topics---Essays in Development Policy, Problems and Policies in Small Economies, India's Economic Crisis: The Way Ahead, The Indian Economy: Problems and Prospects, India's Economic Policy: Preparing for the 21st Century, and India's Economy in the New Millennium: Selected Essays.

Dr. Jalan has visited many countries and has a passion for reading and writing.
