Dr. Kasturirangan was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in August 2003. Presently, he sits on the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Library Committee.

A scientist and technocrat par excellence, Dr. Kasturirangan did his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Physics with specialization in Electronics and went on to do his Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics. His scientific experiences and accomplishments are commendable. He has been earnestly associated with large scientific projects, and organisations such as the Indian Space Research Organisation, the National Remote Sensing Agency, the National Academy of Sciences, the Department of Space under the Government of India, and so on.

In his capacity as a scientist, Dr. Kasturirangan has actively pursued research in areas of high-energy astronomy, optical astronomy, satellite instrumentation as well as conceptualizing satellites in the area of space science. He has also penned several national and international articles and also written books, namely, The Aryabhata Project, Perspectives in Communications, Remote Sensing for National Development, Space-In Pursuit of New Horizons, and many others. He is the recipient of prestigious civilian awards---"Padma Vibhushan," "Padma Bhushan," "Padma Shri," and the "Officer of the Legion d'Honneur" by the President of France, just to mention a few.

An extremely well traveled person, Dr. Kasturirangan is passionate about Carnatic music and enjoys watching football and lawn tennis, reading books and interacting with people from different parts of the world.
