Mr. Mahtab is a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from the BJD. He represents the East-Indian constituency of Bhadrak in Orissa. He is currently serving his third consecutive term as a member of the Lower House.

Mr. Mahtab sits on the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology and the Committee on Estimates. He has also served on the Committees' on Commerce, Labour, Public Accounts, Communications and Information Technology during his previous terms.

A journalist by profession, Mr. Mahtab is also an avid reader. Several books written by him have been published, including Chalish Varshar Ganatantra and Dharma Darshan, Drustikon. He has also been instrumental in organizing several literary and cultural meetings in Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar and Sambalpur.

Mr. Mahtab has a very keen interest in foreign affairs and is very widely traveled. Apart from attending U.N summits at Copenhagen (Denmark) and Rome (Italy), he has also accompanied the Prime Minister on his visits to Iran, Russia, Senegal, Tunisia and Venezuela. He has also been a part of Parliamentary delegations to the U.N and Mexico.

Mr. Mahtab holds a M.A in English from Utkal University in Bhubaneshwar (Orissa).
