Mr. Deora is a member of the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) of
the Indian Parliament. Prior to this, he represented the prestigious
South Mumbai constituency for three consecutive terms in 1984,
1989, 1991 in the Lok Sabha and was re-elected to the same
seat in 1998.
He also holds several other positions as well. He is Member,
Consultative Committee of Ministry of Finance; Member, Standing
Committee on Finance; Vice President, Federation of International
Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies, Geneva; Vice Chairman,
Indian Red Cross Societies; Vice Chairman, Gandhi Institute
of Computer Education & Information Technology, Bhartiya
Vidya Bhavan.
Mr. Deora, a graduate in Economics from the University of
Mumbai, is an industrialist by profession. He entered public
life in 1968 with a spectacular win in the Mumbai Municipal
elections and was Councilor for two consecutive terms. Mr.
Deora has held several key positions including the post of
the Leader of the House during his decade long civic career
which he rounded off by being elected Mayor of Mumbai with
the highest ever majority.
His contributions to Mumbai brought him recognition with
the Maharashtra government nominating him Member of Legislative
Council in 1992. He was also the Chief of Mumbai Region of
Indian National Congress for a record period of 22 years.
Apart from being politically active, Mr. Deora has been a
dedicated social worker. His social & community development
work drew him to the Junior Chamber Movement where he rose
to become the Vice President of IJC, India. He also takes
special interest in problems of urbanization, urban transport,
population control, employment, world peace & disarmament,
energy conservation and pollution control. He travels extensively
abroad to study problems of urban renewal, city transport,
water supply and sewage disposal and public health, etc. He
has regularly organised free eye camps in the last 15 years
benefiting thousands in Mumbai. He introduced India's first
ever project to impart free training in computers to educated
unemployed youth from the weaker sections.
Mr. Deora has many achievements to his credit. The Parliament
for Global Action (PGA) appointed him Councilor from India
& later elected him President for Asia for the year 1992.
He was the first Indian to be elected International President
in 1995 & re-elected to the post the next year. He led
the UN Conference on Population Planning at Cairo and the
UN World Social Summit in Employment & Poverty Alleviation
at Copenhagen, in March 1995. He chaired the 50th anniversary
of UN- global Action Meeting in Japan, September 1995.
