Smt. Cariappa is a Member of Rajya Sabha from Karnataka. She is currently a member of several important committees, including Urban and Rural development. She has also served as the Mayor of Bangalore, Chairperson of Public Accounts Committee, and as Chairman of Public works and Town Planning (2000-2001).

Smt. Cariappa is involved in activities directed towards the welfare of poor families and development of Karnataka. She is also the President of Sports and Women organizations.
