Mr. P.A. Sangma is a Member of Lok Sabha from Meghalaya.
Mr. Sangma has been elected to the Lok Sabha eight times
in 1977, 1980, 1984, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. He has
held ministerial posts as the Deputy Minister, Industry (1980-82),
Deputy Minister, Commerce (1982-84), Minister of State, Commerce
(1984-85), Minister of State, Home Affairs (1985-86), Minister
of State, Labour (1986-88), Minister of State, Coal &
Labour (1991-93), Minister of State, Labour (1992-95), Cabinet
Minister, Information & Broadcasting (1995-96), Speaker
Lok Sabha (1996-98), Founder Member and General Secretary
of the Nationalist Congress Party (1999-2004), Member of the
National Commission to Review of the Working of the Constitution
(February 2000-2002), Member of the National Commission on
Population (from June 2000), Nationalist Trinamool Congress
(from March 2004).
He was the Chief Minister, Meghalaya (1988-90), Leader of
the Opposition Meghalaya Legislative Assembly (1990-91). In
the history of Lok Sabha, Mr Sangma has been the first to
be unanimously elected as Speaker, with universal support
cutting across all political parties.
He was Member, Committee on Subordinate Legislation, Member,
Committee on Communications, Member, Committee on Government
Assurances and Chairman of the Parliamentary Consultative
Committees on Labour, Coal and Communication. Member Consultative
Committee for the Ministry of External Affairs, Standing Committee
on Labour and Welfare, Member Department related Committee
on Home Affairs.
He is a recipient of several awards: Received Michael John
Roll of Honour of the Tata Worker's Union for "distinguished
contribution to the cause of Labour and to the Parliamentary
System" in March 1997.
